Génépi - a Swiss and Italian Après-sport Liqueur
Après-sport perfection: A genuine Wormhood elixir from bygone (read speakeasy) days.
Génépi, the alpine apérif of antiquity, is famous for its herbal and bittersweet kick and, some say, ‘elucidating’ effects.. Our take on this alpine classic includes local honey and the coveted Artemisia umbelliformis (Wormwood). Emerging in the American market a few years ago, this herbal liqueur, also known as génépy or genepì, has become a sought after rarity in high-end cocktails or for those who like to relish a luxurious delicacy.
Originating in the snowy regions of Western Europe, especially Italy, France, and Switzerland, génépi boasts a refreshing taste with hints of mint, licorice, and chamomile. Less potent than absinthe and sweeter than Chartreuse, it has a faded golden-yet-green color and an herbaceous, floral quality. It is, simply, full of finesse.
Génépi is flavored primarily with artemisia, or wormwood. Grown or wild harvested in the alpine region of France.
Originally a medicinal elixir created by Carthusian monks over 400 years ago, génépi gained popularity as a warming and punchy, post-ski pleasure in the late 19th century. Crafting it involves key ingredients like dried artemisia flowers, neutral spirits, local honey, water and almost a year of steeping in a cold dark cellar. The process includes maceration, pressing, aging, and careful filtration.
Our version comes in at 35% Alc/Vol and includes nothing more than the ingredients listed above, unlike the commercial knock-offs which are made from chemical flavorings, brightly colored additives, and include no real wormwood.
Génépi is versatile, enjoyed on the rocks, in highballs with tonic and lemon, or even splashed into hot cocoa. It's a great addition to cocktails like the White Negroni or Whiskey Sour, and pairs well with rich foods, desserts, or as a digestif.
In summary, Génépi is the ultimate après-ski drink and our version, we like to think, is the ultimate expression of this classic liqueur. Enjoy after a rigorous bout in your sport - be it skiing, surfing, or sailing!
